Great Britain were one of the teams to secure their place at the Olympic Games via the world rankings. They arrive in Tokyo having finished third at the 2020 World Championships behind the US team and winners France.

They may draw confidence from their previous experience on the Olympic course. In 2019, in Tokyo at the World Series race that doubled as an Olympic test event, Great Britain placed second after a photo finish that saw France narrowly claim victory. Earlier that year they were victorious on a home course at the World Series event in Nottingham. The British team previously won three world championship titles in four years, triumphing in 2011, 2012 and 2014, with only France boasting more gold medals at the world championships.

At continental level, Great Britain's standout result in recent years is their gold medal at the 2016 European Championships in Lisbon.
