LAST GAMES IN TOKYO
In June 2021 he said the Olympic Games in Tokyo will be his last Olympic appearance, and that he intends to move into Ironman racing, like his older brother Alistair. "I've absolutely loved it but after Tokyo I'll be ready for a new challenge. I know it is only three years to Paris [2024 Olympic Games], but I've been doing the same thing for a long time, the same races in the same places and although the Olympics has been amazing, I'm ready for a change and if anything, the long distance will suit me more." (bbc.co.uk, 04 Jun 2021)

BOUNCING BACK IN 2020
His brother Alistair's involvement in Ironman racing meant Jonathan began training on his own in 2018 and 2019, which he said contributed to poorer results than he was used to. He said this affected his morale, which was intensified by an injury he admits to "rushing back from" around the time of the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, QLD, Australia. "[2018 and 2019] was my time to shine. I felt I was the golden son and that had me invigorated. But having Alistair to train with is massively important. He pushes me in some ways, and we both hold back in other ways. That holding me back is quite important, because Alistair's so experienced. Whereas if Alistair's not there, your default position is always to push more. Not having Alistair there meant I didn't have a yardstick and I burnt out." He hoped the COVID-19 pandemic would give him extra preparation for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. "I've been missing Alistair [in 2020]. I'm used to training with him every day and I'm a very routine person. I know exactly what I'm doing every Tuesday morning. I've been doing that for 15 years. So I've had to find a new routine [in 2020]. [But] this 12 months [Olympic postponement] will actually help me. My body hasn't been in a great place, I've had some niggles and injuries that mean I haven't been able to train to the best of my ability, but this lockdown has allowed me to get over them. I'm probably the fittest I've been since Rio." (teamgb.com, 01 Aug 2020; theguardian.com, 02 May 2020)
