She first competed in a triathlon in 2011, having previously been involved in national youth level swimming. "I'm a bit different to a lot of other triathletes because I got into triathlon really late, at the age of 23. I swam from an early age and my dad did triathlon in the 1980s, he set up the first tri club in Yorkshire. I used to watch him when I was little. I'd also dabbled in a bit of football and golf." She competed in swimming until age 16 before quitting the sport. She took up triathlon after recovering a knee injury. "At the age of 22 I did a half marathon and a local village [fitness] camp and I ruptured my ACL [anterior cruciate ligament] in my knee so I had to have an operation. The rehab for that was cycling. And then I did a triathlon and kind of did all right. So I decided to a do a bit of training and try to improve. I was better at it than I expected and I just got the bug for it." EARLY DAYS
She was involved in swimming at national youth level until age 16 when she began to lose her enjoyment for training. "I had been training nine or 10 times a week, before and after school. I didn't have a social life and I didn't enjoy it. It was so hard and boring. I got fed up with being so tired. I hated it really, so I quit. I went from being extremely fit to doing nothing, never exercising, but I loved it. I had time to do things. I had time to go out with my friends. I never regretted it." (bbc.co.uk, 13 Mar 2020)

OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION DSQ
In August 2019 she and British teammate Georgia Taylor-Brown were disqualified from the 2019 Olympic Qualification Event in Tokyo, Japan, after crossing the finish line in first place together while holding hands. International Triathlon Union [ITU] rules state that athletes cannot intentionally finish in a tie. An appeal from the athletes was rejected. In late 2020 both athletes were still selected by British Triathlon to compete at the Olympic Games. (britishtriathlon.org, 04 Nov 2020; bbc.co.uk, 13 Mar 2020; runnersworld.com, 15 Aug 2019)
