General Interest

General
Romania earned their spot in Tokyo as one of nine teams to qualify via the 2020 World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Gondomar, Portugal. They are competing at their third Olympic Games after appearances in 2008 and 2016.

Romania took part in the closest first round match at Rio 2016. Tied with the Republic of Korea 2-2, Romania's Bernadette Szocs faced Korean player Suh Hyowon in the deciding singles contest, and Suh narrowly took the victory 3-2 to eliminate Romania. At their Olympic debut in Beijing, Romania qualified for the bronze medal play-offs but lost out to the United States of America.

The Romanians were once a dominant force on the world stage, claiming five world championship titles between 1950 and 1956. But after 1969, when they finished as runners-up, their best world championship result was a semifinal appearance in 2000. In recent years they have hinted at a resurgence, and were beaten quarterfinalists in both 2014 and 2018.

Romania were the 2019 European champions, having defeated Portugal in the final in Nantes, France. It was a successful defence of their 2017 title, when they overcame Germany to claim victory. The German team gained a measure of revenge in the gold medal match at the 2019 European Games, where Romania had to settle for silver.
