General Interest

General
Republic of Korea are competing at their fourth Olympic Games, and will be hoping for a return to the Olympic podium after missing out on a medal in Rio. They finished fourth at the 2016 Games after claiming bronze in 2008 and silver at London 2012.

In Rio the Koreans posted wins over Brazil and Sweden, but lost 3-0 in the semifinals to eventual champions the People's Republic of China, and were unable to overcome Germany in the bronze medal match. They were also defeated by the all-conquering Chinese team in the semifinals of the 2008 Games and in the final of the 2012 Games in London.

At the world championships, the Korean team are consistent medal contenders, having finished in the top four at 10 out of 12 appearances from 1995 to 2018. They were runners-up twice in that time, on both occasions to the People's Republic of China, and are yet to win a world title. At the 2018 edition they lost in the semifinals to Germany.

Continentally, the Koreans are also perennial podium finishers. They won silver behind the Chinese team at both the 2018 Asian Games and the 2019 Asian Championships, and have claimed silver behind the Chinese at all seven Asian Games since they won back-to-back Games titles in 1986 and 1990.

The Korean team were one of nine teams to qualify for Tokyo via the 2020 World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Gondomar, Portugal.
