General Interest

General
Germany have competed in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay at all six Games to feature the event. Their appearance in the inaugural event at the 1996 Games in Atlanta proved successful, as they won silver behind hosts the United States of America. They followed that with bronze medals at the next two Games in 2000 and 2004.

Germany's medal-winning run came to an end at the 2008 Games in Beijing, where they finished ranked 12th overall after failing to qualify for the final. It was a similar story at the 2012 Games in London, where they finished their heat more than four seconds slower than the eighth-placed team. Germany managed a slight improvement at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, finishing 12th in their fastest-ever Olympic finish, but still well behind the final qualifier for the final.

It is a similar story at the world championships. Germany claimed several medals in the late 20th century, including gold in 1991 and 1998, but after that podium finishes have proved harder to come by. A brief resurgence saw them claim silver in 2007, but they would fail to make the final at the next two editions they took part in.

Germany's form is moving in the right direction, however, with a seventh-place finish at the 2019 World Championships and a bronze at the 2018 European Championships suggesting their performances are improving.
