General Interest

General
Hong Kong, China were awarded a place at the 2020 Olympic Games as they recorded one of the four fastest times in the qualification period among teams that did not qualify at the 2019 World Championships. Tokyo is their second consecutive Olympic Games, following an appearance in Rio that was their first since making their debut at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. In 2016 they were eliminated after recording the 14th-fastest time in the heats.

At the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, they also ranked 14th overall, missing out on one of the 12 Olympic qualification berths available. In six appearances since 2003, their highest ranking at the world championships is 13th [2003, 2017].

Hong Kong, China have fared better at continental level. They claimed silver behind Japan at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, won bronze at both the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games, and also finished third at the Asian championships in 2009, 2012 and 2016.
