She began experiencing problems with her foot in December 2017, and the injury affected her preparations ahead of the 2018 National Collegiate Athletic Association [NCAA] Championships in the United States of America. She consulted eight specialists, who were unable to identify the cause of the problem, and in May 2018 she saw an acupuncturist in Hong Kong, China that had been recommended by a coach from the Hong Kong Sports Institute [HKSI]. She was diagnosed with inflamed cartilage around her ankle, and was forced to pull out of the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia. (scmp.com, 26 Jun 2018)

She learned to swim at age five at the South China Athletic Association in Hong Kong, China. (scmp.com, 15 Sep 2013)
:
She went to swimming lessons with her older sister Aisling. Swimming began as a hobby, but coaches soon noticed she had natural talent for the sport. "My parents loved swimming, and we lived in a building with a swimming pool. On the weekends, my parents would bring me and my older sister to the pool to teach us to swim. It came to the point where they couldn't teach my sister anything more because she wouldn't listen to them, so they brought her to a swimming club close by. When I was younger, I really hated swimming. Different coaches told my parents I had talent and I shouldn't give up swimming. The more I swam, the more I realised I actually liked swimming."
