General Interest

General
Germany missed the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, ending a run of six consecutive Games in which the NOC had competed in the event. In that period, the team won two bronze medals, in 1992 and 1996. Prior to reunification, both the German Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany won Olympic medals in the event, as did the Unified Team of Germany that took bronze at the 1960 Games. Germany were also one of the four teams that contested the event on its Olympic Games debut in 1912 in Stockholm, finishing with the silver medal, a feat they repeated at the 1936 Games on home soil.

Germany have won a medal at eight of the 12 world championships they have contested since reunification, including gold at the 2001 edition in Fukuoka, Japan. But after claiming silver in 2009 and bronze in 2011, they have failed to return to the podium, finishing last in the final twice [2013 and 2019] and failing to make the final in 2015.

The German team have also won eight European titles since 1993, with their last victory coming at the 2012 edition in Debrecen, Hungary.
