The ROC women's rugby sevens team booked their place at the 2020 Olympic Games through their performance at the Olympic qualifying tournament held in Monaco in June 2021. They eased through the competition in Monaco, winning all five of their matches for the loss of just seven points to secure one of the two Olympic berths available at the tournament.

The Russian team will be making their Olympic debut in Tokyo after they failed to qualify for the inaugural rugby sevens tournament at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Despite winning seven of the past eight editions of the European continental championships, the Russian team have been unable to make a big impression at either the World Cup or World Series. A seventh place finish in 2013 represents their best ranking at the World Cup, and they finished eighth at the most recent edition of the tournament in 2018. Their highest overall finish in the World Sevens is fifth, a result they have achieved on two occasions [2013/14 and 2016/17].
