General
The United States of America qualified for Tokyo 2020 with their best ever performance in the World Series, placing second in the 2018/19 edition. Victory on home soil in Las Vegas and four runners-up finishes during the Series helped to secure a second Olympic appearance in Tokyo.

At Rio 2016, the US team placed third in Pool A following defeats to Argentina and Fiji, as well as a 26-0 victory over hosts Brazil. They missed out on qualification for the quarterfinals as the lowest-ranked third-placed team, but wins over Brazil and Spain in the ranking play-off matches ensured a ninth-place finish for the United States of America on their Olympic debut.

After their impressive 2018/19 World Series campaign, the US team struggled to replicate that level of performance during the 2019/20 Series. Of the six legs played before the competition was ended prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, their best result was third at the Sydney tournament, and they ultimately placed seventh overall. The US team had not ranked lower than sixth at the previous five editions of the Series.

On home soil at the 2018 World Cup in San Francisco, the US team secured a ranking of sixth, their best ranking in the history of the tournament. After shutting out Wales in the round of 16, they came unstuck against eventual runners-up England in the quarterfinals, losing 24-19 after extra-time. The United States of America won three consecutive bronze medals at the Pan American Games between 2011 and 2019, finishing behind Canada and Argentina on each occasion.
