General Interest

General
Fiji won gold at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where the sport was included in the Olympic programme for the first time. The gold medal was particularly special as it was the first time Fiji had finished on the podium in any sport at the Olympic Games. Fiji topped their group in Rio before victories over New Zealand and Japan set up a gold medal match against Great Britain. They secured a dominant 43-7 victory in the final to earn Fiji the gold medal and the distinction of being the first men's team to win the 'Sevens Treble', with titles in the sport's three major tournaments - Olympic Games, World Cup and World Series.

They qualified for the 2020 Games in Tokyo by winning the 2018/19 edition of the World Series, triumphing in five out of the 10 legs of the series. It was their first overall victory at the tournament since the 2015/16 season, and their fourth total World Series title.

Fiji ranked third in the 2019/20 World Series, which was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Their standout leg of the series was in Sydney, where they edged a tight final against South Africa 12-10. South Africa gained a measure of revenge several weeks later as they defeated Fiji in the final of the Los Angeles leg of the series.

The Fijians have twice been World Cup champions, with wins over South Africa in 1997 and New Zealand in 2005. Both victories were achieved in Hong Kong, China. They placed fourth at the most recent edition of the World Cup in 2018, which took place in San Francisco, suffering defeat to New Zealand in the semifinals and then losing 24-19 to South Africa in the bronze medal match.
