She swam as a young child before first playing tag rugby at age 11 for Richmond Borough in London, England. She then played rugby league [13-a-side] at school in Twickenham before taking up rugby union [15-a-side] at age 16 with Grasshoppers in London. In 2018, while at university, she split the final year of her degree over two years in order to take up a contract with the England rugby sevens team. Her passion for rugby developed at age 16 after joining the Grasshoppers club in London. She also competed in athletics at the time, but eventually chose to focus on rugby. "I'd done a bit of netball for Middlesex but didn't enjoy that and I didn't enjoy handball either. It came down to athletics and rugby and dad said you can't just do one sport, you've got to do two. I had done a bit of rugby league in school and I'd always got a great buzz off it so we went to my local rugby club Grasshoppers and I fell in love with it. After a while athletics moved to the side and rugby became my sport." (therugbyjournal.com, 26 Apr 2021)

COACHING
After the England rugby sevens team's contracts were terminated in 2020, she started work as a coach for the London Scottish U15 rugby union [15-a-side] club, where her younger brother Joey was a player. "I was watching him train one day last season [2019/20] and they said, 'Sorry to be cheeky here, can you jump in and coach for a moment?' I didn't mind and I did it for free but this season [2020/21] I've had to say, 'I'm really sorry, but I've just been made redundant, so I can't do it for free. I need to have something that gives me a bit of income'. They then said there was an opportunity for a paid coach coming up. Being a female coach in a lads' environment is funny. You go in and it's like, 'Who are you?' 'Well, I play England sevens'. And then when you start coaching them they are like, 'Okay, you can play rugby'. You can have a bit of banter but they know the line." (therugbyjournal.com, 26 Apr 2021; telegraph.co.uk, 05 Dec 2019)

EARLY BRUSHES WITH FAME
Her English father Jon and Swedish mother Lotta met when they were both working for the Warner Music Group. Her mother's role with the company meant she sometimes worked in Stockholm, Sweden and, although the family lived in Twickenham, England, Emma was often taken overseas on assignments as a young child. "My mum mentioned in passing that I used to play with Madonna's child. When Madonna came to Sweden she would bring her kid and we would play together as we were the same age. It's absolutely weird." She has also worked in the warehouse and as a model for her mother Lotta's Swedish clogs business. (therugbyjournal.com, 26 Apr 2021)
