General Interest

General
Great Britain received a spot at the 2020 Olympic Games courtesy of England winning the 2019 European Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Kazan, Russian Federation. In a repeat of the qualification process for Rio 2016, the Rugby Football Union [RFU], the Scottish Rugby Union [SRU] and the Welsh Rugby Union [WRU] all agreed that England would be the lead nation and their results would be considered for Olympic qualification.

The British team made a strong start to the 2016 Games, conceding a total of three points in their pool phase victories over Brazil, Japan and Canada. Next they dispatched Fiji 26-7 in the quarterfinals, but New Zealand proved too strong in the semifinals, running out 25-7 winners. In the bronze medal match Canada gained revenge for their defeat in the pool phase and prevailed 33-10 to stop the British side making the podium.

England ranked eighth in the truncated 2019/20 World Series. Since finishing as runners-up in the inaugural World Series of 2012/13, England's highest placing has been fourth. Scotland and Wales have not yet managed to become core World Series teams. In December 2020 it was announced that for the first time, men's and women's sides comprising of English, Scottish and Welsh players would represent Great Britain in the World Series in 2021.

England are the only British nation to have participated at the World Cup, and won the tournament's Challenge Trophy at the 2018 edition after being eliminated from the championship bracket in the round of 16.
