In early 2018 he broke multiple toes after being towed behind a boat on an inflatable water toy. He recovered in time to compete at the 2018 World Cup event in Lucerne, Switzerland, in July that year. (rowingnz.kiwi, 20 Jun 2019; sportzhub.com, 04 Apr 2019; tvnz.co.nz, 13 Jun 2018)
:
He took up rowing at age 15 at Malborough Boys' College in Blenheim, New Zealand. (rowingnz.kiwi, 06 Sep 2015 )
:
Initially he took up rowing to get fit for the high school rugby season, but gradually rowing became his preferred sport. "Nothing I've ever come across pushes me like rowing. I love the feeling of accomplishing something I didn't know I could do. It takes you across the world and introduces you to people who, I'm pretty sure it's safe to say, you wouldn't have met otherwise." (rowingnz.kiwi, 01 Sep 2018; worldrowing.com, 01 Aug 2015)
:
To compete at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. (marlboroughweekly.co.nz, 04 Sep 2019)
:
He trains up to three sessions per day, six days a week. "We start off pretty early. I hate being rushed, so I get up with plenty of time. Normally the alarm goes at 05:30 in the morning, and I'll get up and take my time having some breakfast. On the bigger days it can be up to three sessions a day down at the lake. We have a weights gym down at the lake, so it might be two water sessions and a weights session a day. That's Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday - and then on Saturday we have a double session in the morning and get that Saturday afternoon off, so that we can freshen up on the Sunday for a peak performance the following week." (RowingChat YouTube channel, 14 Apr 2018)

"I try to stay away from rituals, the lead-up to one race can be a lot different to another and rituals can get in the way of being adaptable. They are also too close to superstition and I'm not superstitious, because that's bad luck." (worldrowing.com, 01 Aug 2015)
:
"Rowing takes you to your breaking point and teaches you to bend rather than snap." (worldrowing.com, 01 Aug 2015)
