He learned to row while attending school at Radley College in Oxford, England. He was captain of the school's rowing team at Radley College and was also captain of the Oxfordshire county U16 rugby team. (britishrowing.org, 01 Sep 2019; goprincetonetigers.com, 01 Sep 2018)

He was partly inspired by watching the Great Britain men's coxless four winning gold at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, but did not get into the sport until a few years later. "For the next few years it [rowing] was all on the back burner as I was playing rugby and doing other sports. Then when I started rowing, London 2012 was the turning point. I was rowing at school but never thought anything would come of it." (gloucestershirelive.co.uk, 11 May 2020)

"A standard training week for us is pretty full on and typically consists of 18 sessions which vary in length from around 90-120 minutes. We will do a strength and conditioning, lifting session three mornings per week and will row at least twice every day. Finally, we will train every other Sunday too." LOCKDOWN RECORD
During the COVID-19 restrictions in May 2020, he broke Mohamed Sbihi's indoor 2km British record while training in the shed at his parents' home in Gloucestershire, England. George's time of 05:39.6 made him the first British rower to break the 05:40 barrier. "I did have a moment afterwards where I thought about how everything I've done so far in my rowing career has been with the goal of winning the Olympics. To achieve something like this makes me actually feel like I'm on the pathway to doing that." Sbihi later reclaimed the record, clocking 05:39.4 in July 2020. "Tom and I push each other on and he's a big inspiration to me," said Sbihi. (eurosport.com, 30 Jul 2020; britishrowing.org, 19 Jun 2020)

STUDYING ABROAD
He studied politics at Princeton University in the United States of America from 2014 to 2018. "To go to Princeton was amazing. I am very fortunate to have been able to do that and it was rowing which made that possible." (gloucestershirelive.co.uk, 11 May 2020; LinkedIn profile, 01 May 2019)
