"Basically I grew to six foot when I was 11 years old and stayed that height, so they [her parents] just shoved me into sport and the most popular sport was netball. And then a guy who used to be one of the Plymouth [rowing] coaches came into the school and basically said, 'You're really big, get on the ergo, let's see how you do'. And I did pretty well. My dad hopped on that straight away, trained me up and then I soon became the indoor champion on the ergo. Then I made the decision to take it onto water." MOVING TO THE US
She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Southern California [USC] in Los Angeles, United States of America. "I was actually in the process of applying for British universities and then I got someone from UCLA [University of California, Los Angeles] message me. Unfortunately that ended up falling through but I was like, 'Hang on a minute, if they noticed me, other people will'. So I sent an email to the top 20 schools of rowing and they all came back and made me an offer but there was only one school that offered me that year, and that was USC. American university rowing is so different, especially when it's in LA. It was probably the best worst time of my life, only because I was getting up at like 05:15, I was going to bed at 01:00 because you just have to study and train hard. There's no hiding there either and it's four years of that, so it's hard." (Lauren Quigley Media YouTube channel, 24 Nov 2020)
