INSPIRATIONAL MOTHER
He says that his mother Pat motivates him to succeed in rowing after she raised him and his brother as a single mother in a low-income area of Stockport, England. In addition to financial difficulty, she overcame ovarian cancer and later breast cancer. "We grew up on the edge of a council estate and we had big financial struggles. She has always been brilliant and dug us out of the hole. She came through it [cancer], thankfully she is clear now. What she has done makes what I do now look very easy." (dailymail.co.uk, 31 Mar 2017)

FURTHER EDUCATION
In addition to a degree in pharmacy from Cardiff University in Wales, he has studied for a master's degree in oncology at the University of Oxford in England. (Facebook profile, 02 Sep 2019; britishrowing.org, 23 Jun 2019)
