General Interest

General
Spain announced their arrival on the Olympic scene with a gold medal on their debut at Barcelona 1992. Playing in front of a home crowd, the Spanish team advanced from their pool with a two-win, one-draw record and then beat the Republic of Korea in the semifinals. Facing Germany in the gold medal match, they snatched a 2-1 win with a goal in extra time.

The closest Spain have come to finishing on the podium since then was at Sydney 2000, where they placed third in their group in the first round to qualify for the six-team medal pool. Emerging from the pool in fourth place, they took on the Netherlands for bronze and lost 2-0.

The Spanish team secured their first top-three spot at the World Cup in 2018, when they made a run to the semifinals and were knocked out in a shootout by Ireland. However, they recovered from the loss to beat Australia 3-1 in the third-place playoff. The team have not made much of an impact at the Champions Trophy, with a fourth-place finish in 1991 their top result.

Spain guaranteed their place at the Tokyo Games by winning a two-game series against the Republic of Korea at the 2019 Women's FIH Olympic Qualifiers. The matches, which were played in Valencia, finished 2-1 and 2-0 to give the home team a 4-1 aggregate victory and a ticket to Japan.
