General Interest

General
The Japanese men's hockey team are making their first appearance at the Olympic Games since placing 13th in Mexico City in 1968. The team have finished on the podium once at the Olympic Games, claiming the silver medal at the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. They qualified for Tokyo 2020 as hosts.

Japan have competed at four editions of the World Cup. Their most recent appearance came in 2006, when they won one match during the pool stage and were eventually ranked ninth.

Japan claimed their first gold medal at the Asian Games in Indonesia in 2018 after staging a late comeback in the final. Trailing Malaysia 5-2 during the fourth period, Japan scored four times in eight minutes, including a goal with 13 seconds remaining, to secure a 6-6 draw. The match was decided on penalties, with Japan prevailing 3-1.
