General Interest

General
The Republic of Korea are historically the strongest female team in Asia and one of the top sides in the women's game. They secured a spot at the 2020 Olympic Games by winning the 2019 Asian Qualification Tournament in Chuzhou, People's Republic of China.

The Korean team are making their 10th consecutive Olympic appearance in Tokyo. They have two Olympic titles, which they won in 1988 and 1992, and were also runners-up in 1984, 1996, and 2004. Their most recent medal was a bronze at the 2008 Games in Beijing. The Koreans finished the 2012 Games just outside the medals in fourth but had a disappointing tournament in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, where they failed to reach the quarterfinals.

The Korean team's sole world championship title came in 1995, while their most recent podium finish was at the 2003 edition of the tournament in Croatia, where they placed third. The Koreans have struggled at the world championship in recent years, and the last time they reached the quarterfinals was in 2009. At the 2019 World Championship in Japan, they topped their preliminary round group with a three-win, two-draw record, but failed to secure a win in three main-round matches and were eventually ranked 11th.

At continental level the Republic of Korea have dominated the Asian championship, winning 14 of the 17 titles on offer since 1987. The team have performed equally well at the Asian Games, winning gold at seven of the eight tournaments since women's handball was introduced to the programme at the 1990 Games in Beijing.
