General Interest

General
Hungary qualified for the Tokyo Games through the Women's Olympic Qualification Tournaments held in March 2021. The Hungarians finished second in Tournament 2 of the event, beaten only by the Russian Federation in a four-team group that also included Serbia and Kazakhstan.

Hungary have won three medals at the Olympic Games, claiming bronze in 1976 and 1996 and silver in 2000. The team were ranked fifth in 2004, and lost 33-28 to the Republic of Korea in the bronze medal match at the 2008 Games in Beijing. The Hungarians did not compete at London 2012 or Rio 2016.

Hungary's sole title at the world championship came in 1965, and they have secured a further eight podium finishes in total. The team won their most recent medal at the tournament in 2005, where they defeated Denmark 27-24 in the bronze medal match. At the 2019 World Championship in Japan, the squad finished with a two-win, three-loss record in the preliminary phase and did not reach the main round.

At continental level, the senior team's most recent notable result was a third-place finish at the 2012 European Championship in Serbia. The Hungarians were European champions in 2000, and also finished in third place in 1998 and 2004.

In a sign there is a promising pipeline of players filtering towards the senior team, Hungary won the European U19 title in 2019 and claimed a silver medal at the 2018 World Youth Championship.
