General Interest

General
Brazil made their Olympic debut at the 2000 Games in Sydney, and have competed at every edition of the Games since. The team qualified for Tokyo by winning gold at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

With home advantage at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian team won four out of their five preliminary matches to top their group on goal difference. They lost 32-23 to the Netherlands in the quarterfinals, and were eventually ranked fifth after results in the group stage were taken into account. Their previous best result was a sixth-place finish in London in 2012.

At the 2013 World Championship, the Brazilian team became only the second nation from outside Europe [joining the Republic of Korea in 1995] to win the title at the event after beating hosts Serbia 22-20 in the final. However, they failed to reach the last eight at the next three editions of the tournament, including a 17th-place finish in 2019.

Brazil claimed gold at the six most recent editions of the Pan American Games. The team also dominated the Pan American championship between 1997 and 2017, winning gold at 10 of the 11 tournaments over that period. In 2018 the tournament was replaced by the South and Central American Women's Handball Championship, with Brazil winning the first edition.
