General Interest

General
Germany earned their chance to bid for a fourth Olympic medal at the Tokyo Games via the Men's Olympic Qualification Tournaments held in March 2021. Germany finished second in Tournament 3, joining Sweden in booking an Olympic spot with a two-win, one-draw record. The teams drew their encounter 25-25 and then both beat Slovenia and Algeria.

Germany were the first men's Olympic handball gold medallists, winning what remains their sole title at the 1936 Games in Berlin. In the six tournaments they have competed in since, they have claimed two further medals - a silver in 2004 and a bronze in 2016. Germany won four out of their five group matches to reach the quarterfinals at Rio 2016. They beat Qatar in the last eight before being edged by France 29-28 in the semifinals. Poland were no match in the bronze medal playoff with Germany winning by six goals.

At the 2021 World Championship in Egypt, the Germans missed out on the quarterfinals after losing to Spain and drawing with Poland in the main round. Their win-loss record throughout the tournament left them ranked 12th overall. Germany won world titles in 1938 and 2007, and the team have finished on the podium on three other occasions.

Germany are two-time European champions, claiming gold in 2004 and 2016. They finished fifth at the most recent edition of the tournament in 2020.
