He began his coaching career as a player-coach at KA Akureyrar in Iceland from 1991 to 1995, and worked solely as a coach at the club between 1995 and 1997. He coached German teams Hameln [1997-99], SC Magdeburg [1999-06], VfL Gummersbach [2006-08] and THW Kiel [2008-19]. He also coached the Iceland men's national team between 2006 and 2008.
