Germany qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo through their performance at the 2019 European U21 Championship in Italy and San Marino.

The German team were runners-up at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. They finished second in their group before defeating Portugal and Nigeria in the knockout stages to advance to the gold medal match against Brazil. The final ended 1-1, and Germany were defeated 5-4 in the penalty shootout. German players Serge Gnabry and Nils Petersen were named joint top goalscorers at the tournament, with six goals each.

The Germans made their Olympic debut in 1912 in Stockholm, where they lost 5-1 to Austria in the first round. They have also participated at the Olympic Games as West Germany and the Unified Team of Germany. The team won bronze competing as the Unified Team of Germany in 1964 and another bronze as West Germany in 1988.
