She has six older sisters who also played football as children, and joined her first team at age eight with Brams United in Brampton, ON, Canada. She also took part in basketball, flag football, volleyball and athletics. (canadasoccer.com, 09 Mar 2016; olympic.ca, 09 Mar 2016; theglobeandmail.com, 18 Jun 2014)

She grew up in a tough neighbourhood with six sisters and a single mother. "Football took me away from all what was happening in the area. I'm the baby. [My sisters] always picked on me, but football-wise, growing up with that many siblings, it was good. You get to go out every day and train with someone. We always had competitions, one versus one, in the basement. They were never easy on me. They used to push me off the ball and I had to get tougher and stronger. Basically it was like training with a team in my house." (theglobeandmail.com, 18 Jun 2014; canadasoccer.com, 09 Mar 2016; olympic.ca, 09 Mar 2016; theglobeandmail.com, 18 Jun 2014)

"In the locker room, I think I used to be dancing a lot, really outgoing but as you grow your routine changes and for me it's about finding focus before a game, so I'm probably more insular before kick-off now than what I used to be. I feel that on the field I'm a different person though. I'm very loud, I'm very demanding. You wouldn't see me being like that off the field. The pitch and the game just brings out my competitive personality." (soccerbible.com, 14 Aug 2020)

She was named Canadian Women's Player of the Year in 2015, 2017 and 2020 in votes by Canadian coaches and media. She was also awarded Female Athlete of the Year by Canadian media group Postmedia for 2020. (torontosun.com, 28 Dec 2020; cbc.ca, 04 Dec 2020; cbc.ca, 17 Dec 2015; canadasoccer.com, 17 Dec 2014)

In 2015 she was named in the International Federation of Professional Footballers [FIFPro] Women's World XI. She also received the Young Player Award at the 2015 World Cup in Canada and was named in the tournament's All-Star squad. She was also named U20 Player of the Year in Canada in 2013 and 2014. (torontosun.com, 18 Feb 2016; fifa.com, 17 Aug 2015; fifa.com, Jul 2015)

While representing West Virginia University in the United States of America, she was named Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, 2014 and 2015. In 2013 she was named Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Year. (wvusports.com, Dec 2015)

General Interest

General
EUROPEAN MOVE
After graduating from West Virginia University in the United States of America, she began her professional club career with French side Olympique Lyonnais in January 2017. In June 2018 she signed a contract to remain with the club until 2022. "I had just come out of college and I was fortunate to find Lyon who wanted me. I visited PSG as another option but I just felt at the time that Lyon had the high standards I was looking for with lots of great players. For me, I knew that each training session would push me to my limits and make me a better player. I think that from being here in Lyon has meant I've become focused. It's different here. In the dressing room in the States or Canada, you'll have a speaker pumping out music constantly but here, sometimes we're not even listening to music before a game. It's a weird thing to come into but it works. I got used to just listening to my own music 24/7 and that has helped me concentrate." (soccerbible.com, 14 Aug 2020; sport24.lefigaro.fr, 02 Jun 2018)

VERSATILITY
She said she was a natural defender due to her build, but also played as a forward for youth team Brams United in Brampton, ON, Canada. "The fact is I've played in every position on the pitch, winger, holding midfielder, full-back. I just think that centre-half is the position best suited to me. Everything comes into it, my height, my body and my natural defensive instinct. I've always got that desire to get forward and score goals deep inside of me, but the fact is I can do that too, so I'm very happy. I've come a long way and it's a position that's opened a lot of doors for me. My father was a forward and I like to score goals, too." (fifa.com, 25 Apr 2019; thestar.com, 05 Jun 2015)

HERITAGE
Her parents were both born in Jamaica. Her mother moved to Edmonton, AB, Canada, in the early 1980s. (canadasoccer.com, 09 Mar 2016; theglobeandmail.com, 18 Jun 2014)
