General
The ROC qualified for Tokyo as the highest ranked team from Europe outside the world's top four nations. Previously, the Russian Federation won back-to-back men's team sabre Olympic gold medals in 1996 and 2000, followed by bronze in 2004. They were then defeated in the bronze medal match by Italy in both 2008 and 2012. Russian fencers competed at the Olympic Games between 1952 and 1988 as part of the Soviet Union team that won seven Olympic medals in that period, including four golds.

The last time the event appeared at the Olympic Games, in London in 2012, the Russian Federation overcame the US team before semifinal defeat to Romania saw them meet Italy in the bronze medal match. The Italians prevailed 45-40, with the Russian team narrowly missing out on the podium for the second Games in a row. They beat Hungary and France in the gold medal match at the 1996 and 2000 Games, respectively.

The Russian Federation are among the most decorated teams at the world championships, winning 14 medals including nine titles from 22 appearances since 1993. They last stood on the world championship podium in 2016, when they claimed the world title in Rio de Janeiro with victory in the final over Hungary. At the 2019 World Championships in Budapest, they finished fifth after being knocked out of the quarterfinals 45-43 by Germany.
