Her parents encouraged her to have a sport for each season of the year. She initially did karate but did not enjoy it and was looking for something else. She saw fencing on television and although she was not sure if she liked the sport at first, she stuck with it so she did not have to do karate. (olympic.ca, 01 Aug 2015)

General Interest

General
RETURN TO CANADA
In 2020 she and her husband relocated to Calgary, AB, Canada. She had spent the previous seven years living in New York City, NY, United States of America, but she was motivated to make the move with the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in mind after New York saw a surge in COVID-19 cases. "It hasn't been easy. It's been stressful. There have been times where I've cried. But it's all been about setting ourselves up as best we can for the future."(calgary.ctvnews.ca, 29 Oct 2020; glebereport.ca, 13 Aug 2020)

OLYMPIC PURSUIT
She narrowly missed out on both the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, with Canada receiving limited berths for both events. She travelled as a support teammate for the 2016 Olympic Games. "It was hard because we knew we had the people who could qualify. But [missing out on the 2016 Olympic Games] may be part of the reason why I'm still going, so for that, I'm thankful, because some of my best fencing has happened in the last four years." (ottawasportspages.ca, 10 Apr 2020)

FURTHER EDUCATION AND OCCUPATION
She has studied for a master's degree in political science at Carleton University in Ottawa, ON, Canada. She is a certified personal trainer with her own business, and is also a part-time fencing coach. (LinkedIn profile, 01 Jan 2018, fencingontario.ca, 01 Apr 2020; lionethik.com, 01 Sep 2020)
