General Interest

General
Canada qualified for the 2020 Games as the highest-ranked team from the Americas outside the world's top four nations. Tokyo will be the Canadian team's sixth Olympic appearance in women's team foil, and they will be looking for their first medal at the Games. Canada have not competed in the event since the 2000 Games in Sydney, where they finished ranked ninth from nine teams following defeat to Ukraine in their opening round of 16 match.

Historically, Canada have fared little better at the world championships, but they are trending in the right direction by achieving consecutive sixth-place finishes in 2017, 2018 and 2019, which represents their best performances at the tournament. They lost in the quarterfinals on all three occasions but recovered to secure sixth place through the classification rounds. In 2019 they were eliminated at the quarterfinal stage by their continental neighbours the United States of America, in a repeat of the quarterfinal from 2018, and faced Asian opponents in the classification rounds. They defeated Republic of Korea in the first match but narrowly lost out to Japan 33-32 in the fifth-place classification match.

The Canadian team won gold at the 2015 Pan American Games on home soil following silver medals at the previous four Games they contested. In 2015 they turned the tables on the US team that had beaten them in the final four years earlier, but in 2019 the United States of America forced Canada back into the silver medal position. It is a similar story at the Pan American championships, with Canada finishing behind the US team in every final from 2008 to 2019.
