General Interest

General
Italy made their Olympic debut at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, where they recorded the seventh-fastest time in qualification. They were the sixth-quickest team in the first round, and then finished more than seven seconds behind Australia in the final for fifth place.

The Italian team's only medal at the world championships is a bronze from 2018, when they beat Canada by more than three seconds in the third-place final. A year earlier at the 2017 World Championships, they had just missed out on the podium after finishing behind New Zealand in the bronze medal race. The Italians were ranked fifth in 2019 and seventh in 2020.

At continental level, Italy have won a medal in their last five appearances at the European championships. They claimed back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017, beating Poland and Great Britain in the gold medal final, respectively. The British team turned the tables in 2018 and 2020, forcing Italy into the runners-up spot, and the Italians had to settle for bronze in 2018.
