His father Jaime and his uncle Roberto were two of seven siblings who all played international volleyball for Chile, and his mother Monica Fuster was captain of the Chilean women's national volleyball team. His brother Rafael has captained the Chilean men's volleyball team, while his uncles Rodrigo and Ricardo played beach volleyball in the World Series in the 1980s and 1990s. He has partnered his cousin Marco in beach volleyball since 2006. "Despite my entire family being connected with volleyball at the highest level in Chile, I didn't like the sport when I was younger. I was basically anti-volleyball, I preferred playing any other sport and my parents would fully support me in that. They were always watching my football and basketball matches. I was so sure that I would never play volleyball at the time that I even made a bet with some friends, which I obviously lost." He enjoyed the atmosphere at a school volleyball tournament his brother Rafael played in, and enrolled in lessons the next day. Later he was encouraged by his uncle Rodrigo to take up beach volleyball, and from 2010 he began focusing only on the beach format. FAMILY PARTNERSHIP
He carried on a family history of international volleyball and beach volleyball by partnering with his cousin Marco. The pair first teamed up in 2006 and speaking in early 2020, he said they have no plans to stop competing together soon. "Volleyball is a tradition for our family. It is our passion. It is good to play together [with Marco], it is always like home. We haven't thought deeply about what we want to do when we're done playing and we plan on being on the courts for several more years, but I'm sure we'll remain involved with the sport in some capacity. Maybe we'll help promote the sport or support the development of volleyball in Chile. These are some things we'd love to do more now, but we don't have the time."
