General Interest

General
In Tokyo the US men's team are aiming for their fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal, and a seventh Olympic triumph out of the last eight editions of the Games. Their 15 gold medals from 18 total Olympic campaigns is unprecedented, with no other team from any sport claiming as many Olympic gold medals. The US team have won a men's basketball medal at every edition of the Olympics Games in which they have participated, with silver in 1972 and bronze medals in 1988 and 2004 the only 'blemishes' on their record.

They were victorious in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 after thrashing Serbia by 30 points in the gold medal match, which was their largest margin of victory in an Olympic final since the famous 'Dream Team' of the 1992 Games beat Croatia by 32 points to claim gold. Their slimmest Olympic gold medal match-winning margin was a seven-point triumph over Spain in London in 2012.

The US men's team were going for their third consecutive title at the World Cup in 2019 but were knocked out by France at the quarterfinal stage to finish seventh overall. It was their lowest ever ranking at the tournament since it began in 1950, but still secured their qualification for Tokyo 2020.
