He is head coach of the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA. He was appointed to the role in 1996. He is also president of the organisation.

He began his basketball coaching career as an assistant coach for the US Air Force Academy [1973-79] before becoming coach of the Pomona-Pitzer College men's team [1979-87]. He also served as assistant coach for NBA clubs San Antonio Spurs [1988-92] and Golden State Warriors [1992-94]. He returned to the Spurs to serve as their general manger until 2002. He went on to serve as assistant coach of the US national men's team at the 2002 World Championships, the 2003 Americas Olympic Qualification Tournament, and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
