Nigeria debuted at the Olympic Games in 2012 in London. They are making their third consecutive Olympic appearance in Tokyo, having secured a qualification spot via the 2019 World Cup as the highest-ranked African team. The Nigerians placed 11th five years ago in Rio de Janeiro, where they won one and lost four of their group matches. They had an identical record at the 2012 Games in London, where they finished ranked 10th.

At the World Cup in 2019, the Nigerian team were defeated by the Russian Federation and Argentina in their opening two games, with a victory over the Republic of Korea not enough to see them through to the knockout stages. They beat Cote d'Ivoire and the hosting Chinese team in the classification round, however, to rank 17th from 32 teams.

Nigeria contested the final of the AfroBasket tournaments in 2015 and 2017. They claimed gold in 2015, beating Angola 74-65 in the final, but had to settle for second two years later following defeat to Tunisia in the gold medal game.
