General Interest

General
Germany return to the Olympic Games for the first time since 2008, when they were led by all-time great Dirk Nowitzki but failed to reach the knockout round.

The team secured their spot at Tokyo 2020 through the FIBA Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Split, Croatia, which was held in June and July 2021. The Germans navigated their way out of the six-team competition by winning group games against Mexico and the Russian team, and then beat Croatia in the semifinals and Brazil in the final.

Germany's highest ranking in three previous appearances in an Olympic basketball tournament was seventh at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, where they were ousted at the quarterfinal stage by the Unified Team.

The German team have secured one podium finish at the World Cup, placing third in 2002 in Indianapolis. At the 2019 World Cup, they finished third in their group in the preliminary round and were eventually ranked 18th at the tournament.

At their most recent appearance at the EuroBasket in 2017, Germany were knocked out in the quarterfinals by Spain. They won gold at the tournament in 1993, and were runners-up in 2005.
