He studied and played basketball at the University of Michigan in the United States of America between 2015 and 2018, but left before graduating to enter the 2018 NBA Draft. He was selected in the first round by the Los Angeles Lakers as the 25th overall pick. He made his NBA debut in November 2018 against the Orlando Magic. After a season with the Lakers he was traded to the Washington Wizards in July 2019, and in March 2021 he moved to the Boston Celtics in March 2021.
