General
Australia are yet to finish on the podium at the Olympic Games, despite contesting the bronze medal match on four occasions. They lost out to the United States of America at the 1988 Games in Seoul, and were beaten to bronze by Lithuania in both 1996 and 2000. Five years ago in Rio de Janeiro, the Australians came as close to winning a medal as they have ever come. They were defeated in the semifinals by eventual runners-up Serbia before losing to Spain 89-88 in the bronze medal match.

The Australian team's best result at the World Cup is also fourth, which they secured in 2019. After losing another tight game against Spain, this time in a semifinal that went to double overtime, they were beaten 67-59 by France in the third place game despite leading 30-21 at half-time. Their 2019 World Cup performance secured their place at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Australia have had success at other tournaments. They were gold medal winners at the Commonwealth Games in both 2006 and 2018, while the team also secured victory at the 2017 Asia Cup in Beirut, Lebanon.
