Switzerland are making their third Olympic appearance in Tokyo. They previously competed at the Games in 2012 and 2016, but did not qualify from their heat on either occasion.

The team impressed at the 2019 World Championships in Doha with a best-ever finish of fourth in the final, just 0.08s behind the US team that won bronze. The result was their best finish in five appearances at the championships.

At the 2021 World Relays the Swiss team qualified fourth-fastest from the heats, but were disqualified from the final for passing the baton outside the takeover zone.
