Germany won bronze when the women's 4x100m relay first appeared on the Olympic programme at the 1928 Games in Amsterdam. They secured a second medal at the 1952 Games in Helsinki, winning silver behind the United States of America. Over the next 40 years the Unified Team of Germany, the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic would win seven Olympic medals in the event between them, before reunification ahead of the 1992 Games. Germany's best result since reunification is fourth, which they achieved in both 2008 and 2016.

At the world championships Germany won their sole world title in 2001 in Canada. Since their world championship debut as a unified nation in 1991, they have only failed to reach the final on one occasion, in 2011. Their most recent medal at the tournament remains a bronze in 2009, and they finished fifth in 2019 in Doha.

Germany caused an upset at the 2017 World Relays in Nassau by claiming victory ahead of favourites Jamaica. At the following edition in 2019 in Yokohama, they placed third behind the US team and Jamaica.
