General Interest

General
In Tokyo the Belgian team are competing at the Olympic Games for the sixth time. They made their debut as hosts at the 1920 Games in Antwerp, but the team's second appearance at the Games did not come for another 60 years, when they failed to finish their heat at Moscow 1980. They have made the final at the last three editions of the Games, and in 2016 they missed out on the podium by just 0.03s to third-placed Bahamas. They were ranked fourth at the 2008 Games and fifth at the 2012 Games, having been promoted retrospectively on both occasions due to the disqualification of the Russian team.

After several fourth-place finishes at the world championships, Belgium won their first medal at the tournament in 2019 in Doha, claiming bronze behind runners-up Jamaica. They also won bronze at the 2019 World Relays in Yokohama, where they again finished behind silver medallists Jamaica.
