The Netherlands have won one medal in seven appearances at the Olympic Games. The team's sole podium finish came on their debut in 1924 in Paris, where they won bronze behind Great Britain and winners the United States of America. They have competed in the last four editions of the Games and progressed to the final in 2008, where they were disqualified. For the 2012 Games they were promoted from sixth to fifth in 2015 following the disqualification of the US team for an anti-doping rule violation. At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, however, they finished last in their heat and were eliminated.
The Dutch team made their first appearance at the world championships in 2003 in Paris, and marked their debut with a bronze medal. They have competed at the tournament a further six times since then, with a best finish of fifth in 2013. They qualified for Tokyo after making the final of the 2019 edition, where they were disqualified in the final for an illegal baton exchange.
At continental level their highlight at the European championships came in 2012 in Helsinki, where they finished ahead of Germany and France to win their only gold medal at the tournament to date.
