He started running while growing up in Curacao, but didn't take it up seriously until the 2017/18 season, when he stopped playing baseball. (rotterdamtopsport.nl, 01 Sep 2019)

"I started running in Curacao. I had talent, and when I saw [Curacao-born Dutch sprinter] Churandy Martina on TV at the Olympics, I thought 'I want to go to the Olympics too.'" The first sport he played professionally was baseball, but he switched to athletics in the 2017/18 season.
