As a child he was initially more interested in football, and dreamed of moving to England to become a professional football player. But in 2004 he was inspired to focus on athletics by the performance of his friend's brother, Lamin Tucker, who represented Sierra Leone in the 100m at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. "I had never heard of the Olympics. It was the first time I watched athletics on television. I didn't get it, all those people running around a running track for fun, but I loved seeing Solomon Tucker [his friend] and his family look so excited. I thought, 'If Lamin can go to the Olympics, I can too. Just pay attention, I'll be there in four years'." (fhm.nl, 12 Sep 2020)

TOUGH BEGINNINGS
He grew up in Sierra Leone during the country's civil war in the 1990s. When he was age 10 his father was shot dead in front of him by rebels, and he believed his mother had been killed too after he was separated from her when fleeing. Years later he received a phone call from his mother, who had been living in Zwolle, Netherlands, as a refugee. The two were then reunited. (ad.nl, 09 Nov 2020; rijswijksdagblad.nl, 01 Sep 2020)

REPRESENTING THE NETHERLANDS
He previously competed for Sierra Leone, including at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. He gained Dutch citizenship in May 2015, after three years as a resident in the Netherlands, and was cleared by the International Association of Athletics Federations [IAAF] to represent the Netherlands from 15 June 2015. He made his debut for the Dutch national team at the 2015 European Team Championships [First League] in Heraklion, Greece, the same month.
