As a child he was initially more interested in football, and dreamed of moving to England to become a professional football player. But in 2004 he was inspired to focus on athletics by the performance of his friend's brother, Lamin Tucker, who represented Sierra Leone in the 100m at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. "I had never heard of the Olympics. It was the first time I watched athletics on television. I didn't get it, all those people running around a running track for fun, but I loved seeing Solomon Tucker [his friend] and his family look so excited.
