Brazil's 4x100m relay team placed sixth at the 2016 Games after two teams that finished ahead of them were disqualified following the final. Just qualifying for the final in Rio was an improvement on their performance at London 2012, where they failed to progress from the heats. Four years earlier in Beijing they originally finished fourth, but in late 2019 they were awarded bronze following the 2017 disqualification of the Jamaican team that originally won gold in Beijing, due to Nesta Carter's antidoping rule violation. Since first appearing in the event at the 1948 Games, the Brazilians also claimed silver in 2000 behind the United States of America, and bronze in 1996 in Atlanta.
In 12 appearances at the world championships since 1987, Brazil have won two medals - a silver in 2003 and a bronze in 1999 - and finished fourth behind Japan at the most recent edition in 2019. They did claim their first World Relays gold medal in 2019 though, beating the US team by 0.02s in the final. The Brazilian team were disqualified in the final of the 2021 World Relays.
