When he started athletics training at the Mato Alto Olympic Village facilities in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, his coach there, Paulo Servo, asked him if he knew about his mother's sporting career. Until then he had been unaware of his parents' involvement in the sport, and they encouraged him to take up university studies instead. "We maybe had the same sort of dreams that he [Derick] has now, about going to the Olympics. As this never happened to us it was a suffering we didn't want to pass on to him," said his father.
