He participated in athletics, football and rugby league while growing up in Manchester, England. Despite training with professional rugby league club the Salford Red Devils, he eventually chose to pursue athletics. "I started to think about rugby league very seriously. I enjoyed it a lot and loved going down to train with the Reds. I've always liked team sports and so I guess that side of the sport appealed to me. But I realised I preferred athletics more."
