He took up athletics in primary school before joining his local club at age 11. (athleticsweekly.com, 14 Sep 2020)

He was inspired to take up the sport after a school assembly focusing on the rivalry between British athletes Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett. "I thought it was incredible. The hype that surrounded them. Such different characters, such an intense rivalry and such fantastic performances. The whole nation had their favourite and were talking about it in the streets. When I was in primary school in year six, as part of our leavers' ceremony we had a leavers' book and everyone put in what they wanted to do when they were older. Some people put footballers, pop stars, things like that. My one said that I wanted to be an engineer and an Olympian." (bbc.co.uk, 30 Sep 2020; olympics.com, 22 Feb 2021)

OPERATION
As a junior he would have abdominal pain after training. He was eventually diagnosed with median arcuate ligament syndrome, a condition where the ligament, located underneath the diaphragm, squeezes the coeliac artery, restricting the flow of blood and oxygen, and required surgery. "Any time I was doing longer tempo work, I'd say for five or six years, I had on and off kinds of pains. I remember being very confused by it because it didn't seem like there was very much pattern to my pain. Sometimes I'd be totally fine, other weeks I'd not be able to train at all. It never crossed my mind not to have it [surgery] done. My recovery was pretty awful at times. After the operation, every time I moved my core muscles it was very painful. I had to be taught how to get in and out of bed, how to walk and how to walk up and down stairs without hurting myself. The hardest thing was probably my digestive system getting back to normal. When I ate after surgery there was a chance my body would reject it and I would throw up and that happened for quite a while."
