He competed in the discus at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, and around that time he also had opportunities to pursue a rugby career and had been accepted to study law at the University of Oxford. However, in 2013 he embarked on an American football career, signing with NFL team the San Francisco 49ers. He had spells at several other American football teams but did not play in a competitive NFL game, and returned to athletics in 2019. He believes his experience in the NFL has made him a better athlete. "Physically I am a superior animal now [speaking in 2021] to in 2012. Elite discus throwers are stronger than 99% of American football players. I would be stronger if I had done discus my whole athletic career. But in other aspects, explosiveness and athleticism, American football has aided me. And I know more about sport in general now than I did in 2012. I have more experience, more life experience.
