"I have this really vivid memory from when I was in infant school, no older than five years old, wearing these really dodgy-looking pink tracksuit bottoms. We used to have sports days, and it felt like 100m when it was probably like 20m. I would think about that day all year. It was my time to shine. I remember getting down, and they'd say, 'On your marks' and I'd win the race and just remember feeling like it was the most natural thing ever. Since then I've been obsessed with running." General Interest

General
PSYCHOLOGY
She studied psychology at Kings College London in England, and has used some of the things she has learned to help her athletics career. "Sport psychology is not part of my degree, but in my second year we did group thinking and how you can reach group harmony and get the most out of people, by having a bit of disharmony. I think there is a misconception that everyone has to be the exact same, and think the exact same. As a relay team, one of the things we worked on with a psychologist was realising that different people have different strengths. Bringing that together is what makes us the strongest possible team." (bbc.co.uk, 24 May 2020)

FAMOUS NAME
Her parents Richard and Terrey met at an English schools championships when they were teenagers. Her St. Lucian father named her after a cricketing legend. "I'm named after Brian Lara, the cricket player. It's an absolute joke, but it's true. My family on my dad's side, my St. Lucian side, are huge cricket fans. They absolutely adore the West Indies. My dad tried to convince my mum to call me Brianna-Lara. Imagine that. My mum said he could have the Lara but not the Brianna. I've never met him, but I'd love to. He would probably think I'm weird because I'm named after him." (athleticweekly.com, 26 Jul 2018; telegraph.co.uk, 25 Jul 2018; runnersworld.com, 04 Nov 2017)

INSPIRATION
She hopes to help young girls from London get into sport. "Growing up in an inner-city area, going to an inner-city primary and secondary school, it's really important to me to inspire young women. I want to be that encouragement and show that there is more to life than where you are from, your background, or who you are. You can fulfil your potential in any area you choose and sport was that for me. It let me magnify my confidence and that then flowed out into all other areas of my life. For me, athletics has completely transformed my life in that it helped me build up confidence as an insecure teenager. It's taught me about maturity and dealing with failure, it's helped me be a better organiser of my life and given me lots of opportunities." (athleticsweekly.com, 24 Aug 2018; fastrunning.com, 10 Oct 2017)

She has served as an athlete advocate for UK Athletics [UKA]. (bbc.co.uk, 13 Mar 2021)
